Subjective Probabilities on a State Space

چکیده

This paper extends the work of Karni (2009) in two distinct directions. First, it generalizes the model allowing for action-bet interaction and, consequently, the possibility that the decision-maker’s risk attitudes may be affected by his choice of action. Second, it extends the analytical framework to include a state space and advances a choice-based definition of subjective probabilities that represent the beliefs of Bayesian decision makers regarding the likelihoods of events, thus resolving a fundamental difficulty with the definition of subjective probabilities. ∗I grateful to Jacques Drèze and Brian Hill for their comments on an earlier draft of this paper and to Efe Ok and Marco Scarcini for enlightening conversations and useful suggestions.

Decision Making under Uncertainty and Subjective Probabilities

This paper presents two axiomatic models of decision making under uncertainty that avoid the use of a state space. The first is a subjective expected utility model with action-dependent subjective probabilities and effect-dependent preferences (the case of effect-independent preferences is obtained as a special instance). The second is a nonexpected utility model involving well-defined families...

On the Representation of Beliefs by Probabilities

This paper explores two axiomatic structures of subjective expected utility assuming a ...nite state-space and state-dependent, connected, topological outcome-spaces. Building on the work of Karni and Schmeidler (1981) the analytical framework includes, in addition to the preference relation on acts, introspective preferences on hypothetical lotteries that are linked to the preference relation ...

Subjective Expected Utility Theory without States of the World

This paper develops an axiomatic theory of decision making under uncertainty that dispenses with the state space. The results are subjective expected utility models with unique, action-dependent, subjective probabilities, and a utility function defined over wealth-effect pairs that is unique up to positive linear transformation. Ambiguity without a State Space JOB MARKET PAPER

Many decisions involve both imprecise probabilities and intractable states of the world. Objective expected utility assumes unambiguous probabilities; subjective expected utility assumes a completely specified state space. This paper analyzes a third domain of preference: sets of consequential lotteries. Using this domain, we develop a theory of Knightian ambiguity without explicitly invoking a...

Subjective Probability Assessment in Decision Analysis: Partition Dependence and Bias Toward the Ignorance Prior

D and risk analysts have considerable discretion in designing procedures for eliciting subjective probabilities. One of the most popular approaches is to specify a particular set of exclusive and exhaustive events for which the assessor provides such judgments. We show that assessed probabilities are systematically biased toward a uniform distribution over all events into which the relevant sta...
